چکیده

Background Pre-surgical planning for Fontan procedures involves time-consuming patient-specific vascular segmentation and non-intuitive virtual surgical modeling which has encumbered utility in the clinic by surgeons. We present an interactive platform to design virtual surgical options and visualize pericardial enlargement strategy for Fontan connections, starting with patient-specific vascular templates.

Background: The Fontan operation is the definitive operation for palliation of complex congenital heart disease with single –ventricle physiology. The use of the extra cardiac conduit has recently been gaining popularity. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of extra cardiac conduit Fontan procedure (off-pump technique) and that of traditional technique (lateral tunnel techniqu...

Comparison of Power Losses in Intra-atrial and Extra-cardiac Total Cavo- Pulmonary Connections using Computational Fluid Dynamic Techniques

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, more than 30,000 newborns in the United States are born with Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) every year. The Total Cavo-pulmonary Connection (TCPC) or the Fontan operation is a widely employed procedure to palliate CHD conditions. Two variants of this procedure are currently in use namely the intra-atrial TCPC and the extra-cardiac TCPC....

Characterizing Single Ventricle Patient-Specific Anatomy Using Segmentation of MRI and 3D Reconstruction to Aid Surgical Planning

Single ventricle congenital heart defects occur 2 per every 1000 live births in the USA. In these cases, cyanosis occurs due to the mixing of venous deoxygenated blood and oxygenated blood from the lungs. These defects are surgically treated by the total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC), where the superior and inferior vena cavae are connected to the pulmonary arteries routing the systemic venou...

[Pulmonary thromboembolism after Fontan operation].

The fatal outcome in an eleven-year-old girl, one month after an extra-cardiac Fontan operation is reported. She was diagnosed with tricuspid atresia and had a Blalock Taussig shunt and a bidirectional Glenn procedure. The Fontan operation was performed using a Dacron conduit, fenestrated with a 6 mm Goretex tube. The first week after the operation she received low molecular weight heparin, the...
